Scott Shelley has over 23 years’ experience in Facilities Management. Currently the Director of Administrative and Facilities Service for Sun East Federal Credit Union, Scott has previously worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, PNC, American Cancer Society, and David’s Bridal
Scott is a past Greater Philadelphia Chapter Treasurer, and President. He has volunteered on the Programs Committee and will soon be active on the Sponsorship Committee.
How Did you get involved into Facility Management?
After working at a Law Firm (running operations and interacting with the landlord,) I decided that I wanted to focus more on helping others in the facility and wanted a challenge of having employees have their “second home/ work” be a pleasant experience.
Tell us about your favorite project?
I really don’t have a favorite. For me every project was important and had a purpose…I loved seeing a project completed and all customers and employees satisfied. I made it a point to be present on every project I completed.
What is your greatest success story?
My greatest success was probably on World FM Day. Our Chapter volunteered so much and at so many different events. At one event our volunteer group was asked to remove a bathtub and electrical wiring to create an storage space—that was above our capabilities that day …so I made some phone calls and arranged for a plumber, electrician, and carpenter to return to complete the project all pro bono.
Tell us about a challenge or obstacle that you faced in the Facilities field and how you overcame it.
Biggest challenge had to be when a car traveling North on Broad St lost control ended going into the South Bound lanes. The car then hit a woman walking down the sidewalk in front of PNC, destroyed the Thru- Wall ATM, spun the night drop 90 degrees, sheared off a PPA parking meter head, destroyed the front block façade, shattered the glass vestibule, and then hit a streetlight and stopped. When I arrived onsite it was still a Crime Scene investigation as the woman was deceased and L & I was waiting to access for structural damage. Once the investigation was over and L & I inspected a board up team arrived and started their work. Once inside the branch the Philadelphia Police wanted to review the DVR cameras. Showing them the camera views of the women getting hit by the car stuck in my mind for weeks. For some closure–I met with the women’s son and allowed for a memorial to be placed at the accident scene.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I worked as a pinsetter at Holiday Lanes (52 lanes) in Claymont as a teenager. Working on the A-2 Brunswick machines was a unique experience for 16-Year-old kid. Luckily, I had good instructors.
What learning experience would you pass onto future FM’s?
Ask questions of other FMs. Be onsite when projects are ongoing, volunteer and get involved in IFMA. Lastly, network and gain you FM credentials
