Phuong has been in the Building Automation industry since 2017, starting as a sales engineer and moving on to technical marketing/business development for Radius Systems, a Building Automation, Security, and Lighting controls integrator. Currently she is the Director of Sales, Marketing & Business Development and has been an active member of IFMA Philadelphia since 2021. After graduating from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, she went into process engineering at Samsung Austin Semiconductor before transitioning to a sales role at Radius Systems. When asked about her hobbies, she will tell you she tries to play golf unsuccessfully and enjoys bowling, reading, traveling, French culture, hiking, kayaking, cooking, and playing piano.
How do you interact with Facility Managers?
Facility Managers share with me their HVAC concerns/pain points that they are seeing at their facility. I like to hear about it all because it helps me to understand what they’re seeing in their everyday operations and what they wish worked better. Whether it’s troubleshooting persistent unresolved specific issues, energy management, or options out of costly mandatory annual service contracts with proprietary systems – I care about hearing how we can help and be a technical resource to solve problems.
Tell us about a favorite project related to working with a Facility Manager.
One of our favorite projects was the conversion of an existing office space to a life science incubator, featuring newly-constructed premier lab space. We worked closely with the building owners, facility staff, and MEP engineer to design and implement HVAC/BAS controls for a lab automation system.
What is your greatest success story related to working with Facility Managers?
We often work with Facility Managers in evaluating their Building Automation options, especially when they’re looking into how to move from proprietary systems with high mandatory service contracts to open protocol BACnet based systems. When we can help save operational costs for a FM, whether it’s through implementing energy saving control strategies or eliminating a mandatory service contract, we consider that a success.
What is something that most people do not know about you?
I lived in Paris, France for 3 years and moved there as a brand new mom with my three month old son and husband.
What learning experience would you pass onto future FMs?
Choosing partners who care about your facility’s best long-term interests and will be a trustworthy and responsive technical resource is something that will save you time and create efficiencies in your operations. Continuously evaluate the value you’re getting from your vendors. Being involved with IFMA and getting to know the members will open the door to a network of fellow FMs and vendor partners, who can be valuable resources and will collaborate with you on issues you’re seeing at your site.
