Michael Collier is the President of Franklin Flooring, Inc. Michael grew-up in the flooring industry and has over 17 years of experience. Michael is third generation in the flooring industry. His father John Collier founded Franklin Flooring, Inc in 1995 after a career with both DuPont Flooring Systems and Milliken. Michael’s grandfather, Jack Collier was Vice President of Sales for Lees Commercial.
Michael started his career working in the warehouse, demo’ing flooring for projects, and helping installers in the field. In 2006 Michael graduated from Penn State University with a B.S in Political Science and began full-time at Franklin as a project manager. In 2010 he became the Operations Manager for Franklin where he worked with the other project managers on the team to orchestrate scheduling, logistics, technical requirements, and installations for projects that would run day or night, weekday and weekends. He also helped develop Franklin Interior Solutions, a design-build commercial interior remodel service, as well as Franklin Maintenance, a flooring and tile maintenance and restoration service.
Michael has had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best people in the flooring industry; from customers, installers, suppliers, vendors, industry-partners, and everyone on the Franklin team that has worked so hard to build the company to where it is today. In 2015 Michael became VP of Operations and in 2020 became President. Over this time period Franklin has doubled in revenue and has expanded its services and capabilities.
Franklin Flooring has been recognized by the industry and has won a number of nationally recognized awards. Over the years Franklin has completed projects in PA, NJ, NY, MD, OH, VA, NC, FL, AL and TX.
Michael is extremely proud of the team that Franklin Flooring has built over the years and the privilege to work with some of the best team members and customers in the flooring industry.
In 2010 Michael married his wife Sally who he met at Penn State University. Together they have three children, Josephine (9), Abraham (6), Felicity (2), and a baby due in January. Family is very important to him. When he is not busy at work he is always involved in some activity, gathering, or some other adventure with family.
How did you get into Facility Management?
Franklin Flooring has always worked with end-users. One of the things we think we do a good job of is renovations of occupied spaces. That has made facilities managers our number one customer and number one focus. I have had the opportunity to work with many FMs over the years.
Tell us about a favorite project.
It is very difficult to name one favorite project. But I would probably say the occupied renovation of a personal care unit for one our long time Senior Living customers. We coordinated the design and the other trades to team-up to do a full interior renovation of their wing.
What is your greatest success story?
I would say my family first. My wife Sally and children, Josie, Abe, Felicity, and baby due in January. But that also extends to our team which to me is like family. Building our team at Franklin Flooring. I get to work with some of the best people. I am really proud of the team that we have. Each of our players has developed to become leaders in their own right. Getting to work alongside them, solving problems, and develop long lasting customer relationships. We are in a growth phase and we are continuing to build and grow the team we have worked so hard to put together. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and excited where we are going in the future.
Tell us about a challenge or obstacle that you faced in the Facilities field and how you overcame it.
Due to a lead time on a carpet tile we had between Thanksgiving and New Years Day to lift systems furniture at night and replace over 15,000 sy of carpet tile in a occupied office. We had to orchestrate about 25 installers onsite every night and five tractor trailer deliveries during the project.
What is something that most people do not know about you?
Family is important to me. We are always busy with baseball, gymnastics, fishing, camping, boating or some other adventure.
What learning experience would you pass onto future FM’s?
Since I have always worked for FM’s as a service provider, I would say that when we are able to work closely with a FM we can gear-up and become more responsive to the needs of that FM. When we can become a valued member of their team we can become an extension of their department (like their own in house flooring department). When something urgent and unexpected happens we can move mountains to make things happen for that FM because we are better able to anticipate and respond. This goes back to having long lasting relationships with customers. Which really means knowing our customer and delivering service.
