Matthew Clouse

Currently functioning as the Facilities Manager at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.

As a member of IFMA since 2013, I have found the networking and education opportunities paramount to my success in facilities management.  I am currently working on my FMP and hope to finish in the next few months.

Currently residing in Cheltenham, PA with my wife. I am a father of two and grandfather of one.  I am a US Navy Veteran with a background in avionics. Prior to facilities management, my background was in sales and sales management.

How did you get into Facility Management?
I started in facilities management accidentally when the department heads above me left and I was tasked with moving the company to a new location. After the move, I was offered the facilities manager position. As the FM for a small location for Deluxe Corporation, I was called on to handle new acquisitions and building closures in multiple states. My most challenging time in FM was when I was tasked with closing my own building and working my way out of a job. Not only was the project on a rapid timeline, but it was also mentally challenging not knowing my future after the closing.
After only a few months out of work, I landed at Tenth Presbyterian Church. It is a large 175-year-old church with six buildings and 500,000 sq.ft.. Keeping the facility in top shape and ready for Sunday services is my primary objective.

Tell us about a favorite project.
My favorite project is currently running, we are doing a complete interior plaster repair and repaint of Tenth Presbyterian Church including a full brand-new lighting project. Working with multiple vendors and even an architectural conservator in order to keep the building updates historically correct.

What learning experience would you pass onto future FMs?
My advice to future FMs would be to never be afraid to get your hands dirty. Don’t be afraid to climb a ladder, move furniture or paint a room.
