Facility Manager’s; Value Creators & Agents of Public Health

Facility Manager’s; Value Creators & Agents of Public Health: The WELL Building Standard™ & The WELL AP™

The first standard of its kind that focuses attention solely on the health, comfort, productivity and wellness of building occupants, The WELL Building Standard™ is advancing the real estate industry, expanding the sustainability movement and changing how people view and value the spaces they occupy.
Understanding the profound impacts, the spaces where we live, learn, work and play have on human health and by putting people at the center of all design, construction and operations decisions; WELL Certified spaces and the Facility Managers responsible for operating them who earn the WELL AP™ credential create value for themselves, their company, their customers and become powerful agents of public health.

The WELL Building Standard™ is the leading tool for advancing health and well-being in buildings globally and is revolutionizing the way people think about buildings. Since its public launch in October 2014, over 1,250 projects across multiple commercial and residential property types in 43 countries have registered to achieve WELL™ Certification.

WELL™ is a performance-based building standard that explores how design, operations and behaviors within the places we live, work, learn and play can be optimized to advance human health and well-being.

The WELL Building Standard v1 covers seven core concepts of health; Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Fitness, Comfort and Mind through over one hundred comprehensive features intended to address specific health, comfort or knowledge aspects through design elements, operations protocols or performance standards. (Approximately 40% of the features in WELL v1 are operations protocols) WELL features are categorized as either a Precondition (mandatory to achieve certification) or an Optimization (optional). Precondition features represent the core of the WELL Building Standard and can be thought of as the foundation for wellness in the built environment. However, WELL is a flexible building standard and most features are categorized as Optimizations. Optimization features include optional technologies, strategies, operation protocols and designs which can be implemented by the project team and at the discretion of the project owner to increase a properties impact on the health of its occupants and the properties WELL™ score (Silver, Gold or Platinum).

WELL™ is focused exclusively on the ways that buildings and communities, and everything in them, can improve our comfort, drive better choices and generally enhance, not compromise, our health and wellness. As demand for WELL spaces continues to increase and accelerate, so has the demand for Facility Management professionals who are also WELL AP’s.

The WELL Accredited Professional (WELL AP™) credential denotes expertise in The WELL Building Standard™ and a commitment to advancing human health and wellness in buildings, interior spaces and communities. Facility Managers who earn the WELL AP™ credential will;
 Grow their Knowledge: Learn how to create spaces that empower people to eat, sleep, work out, perform and feel their best.
• Advance their Career: Differentiate themselves as a leader within the industry.
• Maintain Leadership: Gain access to educational opportunities that help them stay up to date with the latest wellness strategies.

People spend more than 90% of their time indoors and the conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. Facility Managers are responsible for many key roles in creating and maintaining environments that are healthy, inclusive, and optimize comfort, productivity, performance and wellbeing. Undeniably, Facility Managers are value creators and agents of public health.
